I've been experimenting with Nalebinding, which is a textile fabrication method that pre-dates knitting and crochet. It's usually associated with Vikings and Anglo-Saxons. Check out the Wikipedia article if you want to know more, it's a great starting point! ([link])

Anyhoo, this is my first Nalebinding sample worth showing to the world. I'm trying to figure out how to make a half-mitt to trade with a friend (she bought a lovely wooley pair she can't wear, so I'm going to try to make her a pair out of cotton or another non-wool material). Recognize the yarn? It's this stuff! ([link]) It's quite satisfying to spin up some yarn and then make something out of it!

You, Gal, discover the most interesting ways of making stuff and being creative. lol I never heard of half the stuff you do, until you do it! :3

I envy your skillz. <3

I just went to a fair and bought the most amazing pair of half gloves!
I've gotten so interested and I can't believe you seem to be the only other person on dA that knows what nalebinding is!!
Good luck!!! :3

I'm really surprised too to be honest, there does seem to be a pretty good little re-enactment population on dA. Maybe I'm the only one daft enought to post photos of nalebinding samples, lol! There's a good (but not fairly active community) on both Tribe.net and livejournal that you might like to check out :)

Which fair did you pick them up at, and if you're generally UK based, did you purchase your half mitts from Curious Works? :) Just a stab in the dark there...

Thats really neat, did you ever finish them? The only thing I can nalebind in little baggies with store bought wool. I'd love to get into spinning.... someday... There's this lady somewhere that I saw on the net ages ago who made a tunic starting with the spinning! Only she used a spinning wheen not a drop spindle to save time, but it was stuill pretty impressive!
But I can imagine how satisfying it is to spin something and then make something out of it!

Eeeep, I haven't started them yet! A few time-sensitive projects cropped up. I'm planning on going to my local yarn store soon to pick up the stuff for the half-mitts, they're meant for a friend!

Spinning is pretty easy and really relaxing, you should give it a go! I always feel accomplished after I spin something up.
